skeletons on skeletons

tentacled polyps
turning to calcium carbonate

sometimes          flowers
swollen brains          supernovas          cups
fans          pillars          lettuce
whips          claws          mushrooms          hands

sharks          mouthfuls of fish
teeth full of water
orange and white fish among tentacles
barracudas like knives                    opening jaws
flat yellow fish          butterflies
impaled on barracuda fangs
stings of jellyfish

a crown-of-thorns starfish
two          fourteen          a hundred starfish
stomachs          outside their mouths
outside their bodies
on the coral          white scars

all of this under my skin

your mouth          on my skin
your mouth          that doesn’t see my reef

I am endangered

Maybe it is the marine biologist in me, but I am impressed with this :) You extend the metaphor very well, and I get very strong, vibrant, complicated images through most of the poem, until the sudden, vulnerable image at the end. Nicely done!
